WINFIELD — The Barton men’s and women’s tennis teams captured the consolation draw in singles during the ITA Fall Regional held in Winfield this past weekend.
Guido Luna won four straight matches in the consolation draw to capture the men’s draw while Mariane Lima and Julia Candiotto both reached the consolation finals in the women’s single, deciding to double forfeit the match and call it a draw.
“Well we know who’s who in the conference after this tournament,” Coach Lyle Stickney said. “We are definitely stronger than we have been in recent years, with greater depth on both men’s and women’s squads, but, Seward is once again very talented.”
Luna lost his opening match to Sander Jans of Seward, 6-2, 6-3 then rolled through the backside. Luna lost just eight games while advancing into the consolation finals where he defeated Killian Dagneaux of Cowley, 8-2.
“Guido has had a really good fall, currently 8-2 at No. 1 singles, competing with an injured ankle,” Coach Stickney said. “After a second round lose he won his next four matches.”
Barton’s Sebastian Pino picked up a win in the opening round over Cowley’s Dagneaux by in three sets, winning 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). His tournament ended in the round of 16 with a loss to Hugo Lobo of Seward, 6-4, 6-4. Lobo would make the finals.
Oswald Cano and Tom Letecheur both competed for the Cougars but were not able to pick up a win at the highly competitive event.
Neither Barton doubles team earned a win.
For the women, Mariane Lima and Julia Candiotto both lost their first singles’ match then made their way to the consolation finals by picking up a couple wins. The two agreed to double forfeit the match.
The duo teamed up on the doubles court to make it to the semifinals before being bumped from the title run.
“Mariane and Julia made it to the doubles semis, and both made it through to the back-draw final where they were to meet in the finals,” Coach Stickney said. “Since it was late in the day we chose not to play it.”
