Leading scorer Dionne Harris of Barton Community College had a tough time scoring Friday night against Coffeyville.
Harris, who managed only six points against the Lady Ravens, came up in the second half against Labette during the Highland Hotel-Booster Club Basketball Classic at Kirkman Activity Center.
Harris, who entered the classic averaging 13.8 points, scored 11 of her team-high 15 points after halftime to help lead Barton to a 56-53 win over the Lady Cardinals Saturday evening. She also had 10 boards to turn in a double-double.
Harris, a sophomore forward/center from Philadelphia, Pa., maybe got a little too hyped, drawing a pair of technical fouls as she wasn’t around for the finish after being ejected.
Barton (7-2) then was able to survive a late run by the Lady Cardinals to win its sixth straight. A once-comfortable 53-44 lead suddenly got close as Labette went on a late 9-2 run, whittling the margin to 55-53 after Chamiya Reaves drained a 3-pointer with 16.1 seconds left.
But freshman guard Erin Copeland, a native of Kansas City, Kan., made the first of two free throws with 10 second remaining for a three-point lead and the Lady Cougars held on.
Freshman forward Taschell Phillips hit 6 of 9 shots in the first half for 12 of her 14 points. The Lady Cougars led 29-26 at halftime after shooting 42.9 percent from the floor (12 for 28).
Labette kept close despite being outrebounded 27-16 in the first half. Reaves scored 15 first-half points, hitting 6 of 8 field goals.
In Saturday’s opener, Coffeyville’s women defeated Pratt 68-59.
Coffeyville (5-3), which outrebounded Pratt 52-37, was led by Karin Robinson with 15 points, one of four Lady Ravens in double figures.
Pratt (5-2) was led by Ann Pauly with 17 points.
