COLBY — The Barton Community College women’s basketball team led 35-21 at halftime and then went cold on Wednesday evening.
Colby went on runs of 10-0 and 7-0 to tie the game, but some clutch free-throw shooting in the final minute allowed Barton to edge the Lady Trojans 61-58.
“We pulled it together,” BCC head coach Darin Spence said. “We started off a little out of sync. We defended well and just couldn’t make a basket. The kids did a good job holding it together and then the baskets began to fall.
“In the second half, we just kind of stopped. Then the turnovers came, and we had a rough stretch. We made free throws down the stretch and got a good win.”
Colby (6-15, 2-5) knotted the game at 52 on a Shantydra Arnold 3-pointer with less than five minutes remaining.
The two teams traded one-point leads for the next four minutes before Raven Anderson hit a layup off a Netanya Jackson assist to give Barton a 57-56 lead with 29.3 seconds remaining.
Devan Boeger, a sophomore guard from Great Bend, and Dionne Harris, a sophomore forward, each hit free throws in the final 15 seconds to keep Barton ahead by three points.
Barton, which is 13-7 overall, 3-3 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division, was led by Shea Shoemaker, who hit 2 of 3 from 3-point range and finished with 10 of her 13 points in the first half.
“Shea had a solid game and ended up with 13 points,” Spence said. “She made five free throws, 5 of 6, and that helped her get her rhythm going. She fell and came up holding her arm funny. She may have tweeked her arm injury, so we’ll need to watch that, I think.”
