HESSTON — It took a while to get on the scoreboard, but once the Barton women’s soccer got rid of that zero, the Cougars kept scoring.
Barton scored three times in the final 30 minutes to earn a 3-1 road win at Hesston Sunday afternoon in regular season region action.
The win improved Barton to 5-4-2 in the region standings and 6-5-3 overall. Hesston dropped to 4-8 in the region and 9-8 overall.
The Cougars are currently sitting in fifth in the region, needing a top four finish to earn a playoff spot. Barton has three more contests left in the region, two against Northwest Tech and one against Pratt.
Barton will probably need wins in all three to make the post season.
Hesston took a 1-0 in the 34th minute, scoring on a Miya Gonda goal from Miho Okuda. It was one of only three shots the Larks got off in the opening 45 minutes of action. Hesston would only get one shot off the second half.
Meanwhile, Barton was getting 28 total shots off but were only able to put 11 of those on goal. Nine of those shots on goal came in a second half dominated by the Cougars.
Barton finally tied it up 15 minutes into the second half on a Thamires Lima goal off a corner kick for the freshman’s first goal of the season.
The Cougars took the lead 15 minutes later when Shania Jackson-Brown scored on an assist from Sydney Sulzman.
Barton got an insurance goal on a free kick by Sulzman that found the net with 11 minutes to play in the contest.
The Cougars will host Northwest Tech Wednesday is what is probably a must-win match it Barton is going to play in the post-season. The Mavericks will bring a 9-2 region mark to Great Bend and an 11-2 mark overall.
Barton will then host Pratt Saturday before a return trip to Goodland to face Northwest Tech Monday in the regular season finale.
