Barton women roll by Sterling JV to tip off basketball season

It wasn’t the 101-point beat down the Barton women’s basketball team put on the Sterling JV a couple of years ago.

But the outcome was never in doubt.

The Cougar women got their 2018-19 season off and running Wednesday night with 101-44 win over the Warriors.

It took the Cougars a while to get going but once they did they kicked it into high gear.

Barton led just 9-5 four minutes into the game but by the end of the first period, it was a 32-10 contest.

By half, the lead grew to 52-16 and route was on.

The lead hit 50 early in the fourth quarter and the Cougars surpassed the 100-point plateau in the final minute on a pair of Jade Phillips free throws to cap off the season-opening win.

The Cougars shot over 50 percent from the floor in the win while holding Sterling to just 25 percent.

All 13 Barton players found the scoring column, led by Jaylin Stapleton with 16. The sophomore from Meade finished with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Freshman Richelle Turney scored 13 in her debut with the Cougars.

Double-double machine Taylor Regan came up just short of reaching those totals in the season opener with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds. Stapleton and Ryen White each handed out four assists while White led the Cougars with five steals.

Dakota Boehler scored 10 to lead the Warriors.

Things will get a bit tougher for Barton this weekend as No. 25 Northeastern Oklahoma comes to the Barton Gym in the first of two games over the weekend as part of the Best Western/Booster Club Classic.

The Cougars will take on nationally ranked Northeastern Oklahoma Friday night at 5:30 and close out the weekend against Murray State.
