Trip to Florida out of the way. Thanksgiving out of the way.Time to get back to work for the Barton women’s basketball team.
In the final tuneup for Jayhawk Conference play, the Cougars doubled up Hesston College, 114-57, Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. The win improved Barton to 6-1 on the season while the Larks fall to 1-10.
It wasn’t much of a game from the get-go. After falling behind 4-2, Barton went on a 15-0 run to take a 17-4 lead midway through the opening quarter. By the end of the first quarter, Barton had a 33-11 lead on the Larks.
The Cougars kept that lead around the 20-point mark most of the second quarter, getting as high as 29 on one occasion before taking a 53-26 lead to the locker room.
The second half was much as the same as Barton continued to pull away and got back on the winning track after dropping the second of two games in Florida.
The Cougars led 86-38 after the third and topped the 100-point mark with just less than six minutes left in the game on a 3-pointer by Taylor Nichols.
The numbers were big for Barton. Five different Cougars hit double figures and 12 in all scored. Jaylin Stapleton led Barton with 18 while Nichols scored a career-high 17. Taylor Regan and Mallory Miller each added 12 with Richelle Turney tossing in 11.
The Cougars shot just under 50 percent from the floor and hit a sizzling 13-of-24 on 3-pointers and 23-of-28 at the free throw line.
Regan, who is averaging a double-double, recorded one Wednesday as well with 10 rebounds. Ryen White just missed a double-double with nine points and a career-high nine boards. Stapleton and Conner Keith each had five assists.
Essonce Tolson scored 15 to lead Hesston.
While Barton was playing its final non-conference game, the rest of the Jayhawk was in conference play. One Jayhawk West team has a bye each time out and Barton started the season with that bye.
The Cougars will start their Jayhawk play Saturday with a trip to Arkansas City to take on Cowley College. Tip for the match up is set for 5:30 pm.
