KANSAS CITY — A quick start put the Barton women’s soccer team in control early Saturday afternoon in Jayhawk Conference action on the road against Kansas City Kansas.
That quick start would lead the Cougars to a 4-0 win over KCK and set up a showdown for the West lead in the Jayhawk.
The win moved Barton to 6-1 in the West and 9-1 overall. The only team ahead of them is the No. 16 team in the nation. Cowley is 5-0 in the West and 6-0-1 overall on the season.
Those two teams will go at it for the West lead Wednesday at Barton. No other team on the West side of the conference is above .500 on the season, now passing the midpoint.
In the match at KCK Saturday afternoon, Barton got a pair of quick goals to take control of the contest.
Alisia Solis scored on an assist from Nicole Thorp and Annika Gerdau did likewise on an assist from Francesca Martellas.
For Solia it was her sixth goal of the season and for Gerdau her team-leading ninth. That is how the match went to half.
The Cougars made sure there would be no rally in the second half by adding a couple more goals early in that half as well.
The combination of Maria Angiolini and Seulgi Lee scored both times. Angiolini netted her second and third goals while Lee ran her assists total to six, giving her the team lead.
The battle with the Tigers for that top spot in the West will get underway at 1 pm Wednesday at the Barton Soccer Complex.
The Cougars, receiving votes in the latest NJCAA poll, will bring a 6-game winning streak to the match. Cowley has just the one tie on its schedule two games back against No. 8 Monroe.
