Sophomore post player Netanya Jackson scored 17 points in only 12 minutes of action, leading three Barton Community College players in double-figure scoring during a 67-48 home win over the Southwestern College junior varsity on Tuesday night.
Blair Bloomfield added 13 points and Dionne Harris had 12 points and nine rebounds. It was the fourth straight win for Barton (5-2).
“You’ve got to play who’s on your schedule and you try to be as efficient as you can and stay fundamentally sound,” said Barton head coach Darin Spence, whose team will be facing its toughest competition of the season thus far this weekend, when the Highland Hotel-Booster Club Basketball Classic takes place at Kirkman Activity Center.
This weekend, Barton plays Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference foes Coffeyville (Friday at 5 p.m.), and Labette (Saturday at 5).
Against Southwestern’s JV, the Cougars had trouble maintaining their intensity.
“We played well in spurts, although I wasn’t pleased with the way we played defensively,” Spence said. “We didn’t guard the ball well and didn’t contain their penetration to the basket.
“We just need to stay more focused.”
The teams headed in opposite directions right from the start, resulting in the Cougars building a 36-20  halftime lead.
Barton made its first five shots from the floor for a 10-0 lead with the game five minutes old while Southwestern’s JV missed its six shots.
The Lady Moundbuilders chopped the lead in half at 12-6 before Bloomfield’s 3-pointer at the 13:34 mark increased Barton’s lead to 15-6.
Barton upped the margin to 23-10 after Ta’Kerra Williams drove the baseline for a basket and then took a feed from Jennifer Allende on the Cougars’ next possession and knocked down a shot from the baseline at the 10:45 mark.
And, it was 27-10 at the 8:48 mark after Harris hit a turnaround jumper in the lane. But Southwestern’s Montana Rickey answered with a 3-pointer with 8:25 left in the half, ending nearly a five-minute scoring drought to make it 27-13.
The Lady Moundbuilders outscored BCC 7-4 over the next seven minutes to close the gap to 31-20. But Erin Copleand answered with a 3-pointer with just over a minute left in the half and Taschell Phillips’ driving layup made it a 16-point game at the break.
Jackson scored 11 of her game-high point total in the second half and finished 6-for-11 from the floor and 5-for-7 at the free-throw line.
Southwestern’s JV never threatened in the second half.
