EMPORIA- With two remaining conference meets left to the season, the Barton Community College women’s golf team have the luxury of already claiming the conference championship as the Lady Cougars won their fourth straight conference meet this past Monday with a sixty-two stroke victory. Held at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course, Barton held a commanding thirty-nine stroke lead after day one’s eighteen holes before widening the gap on Monday’s final nine holes. Barton shot a team score of 517 to easily outdistance second place Colby Community College’s 579 and Dodge City Community College’s 589. Barton’s next competition will come on their home course as the Lady Cougars host Conference Meet No. 5 at Stoneridge Country Club Golf Course April 6-7.
Natthakan Teeratrakul had to come from behind to capture her fourth straight meet this season firing a two-over-par on the final nine. Trailing Coffeyville’s Julia Dierker by one stroke after carding an 82 on the first eighteen, Teeratrakul and Dierker battled through twenty-six holes before Teetrakul won the last hole finishing with a 37 keeping her school record fifth straight win in conference play dating back to last season.
In the running for the title after day one firing an 83, freshman Hye Rin Kim slipped in the final round with a 44 but easily held on for third place. Abbie Thelen shot the second to lowest round for the Lady Cougars on the second day to move into the fourth spot after carding an opening day 92. Making another second day improvement, Madison Walden followed her 94 with a 43 to finish fifth giving the Lady Cougars four golfers in the top five. Madison Werth rounded out the team entries just missing out on tenth place by one stroke with rounds of 97 and 51.
Barton had two compete as individualists led by Lea Clubb carding a 98 and 48 to finish in ninth place while Presley Smith, who was competing in her first collegiate meet, had rounds of 116 and 57.
