Bartons Brickey takes third at Holiday Inn Open in Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. — With more than 500 wrestlers competing the Holiday Inn Open in Kearney was one of the biggest of the year for the Barton wrestling team.
Several Cougars went deep into the brackets with one of those taking third place.
Barton was led at the event by Brix Brickey, who took third at the 285 division. Brickey wrestled all the way into the quarterfinals before suffering his first loss. Brickey responded with a pair of pins to move into the consolation semifinals where he defeated Alex Mai of Chadron State, 4-1.
In the third place match, Brickey bean Ian Cheatum of Colorado School of Mines, 5-1.
Caysen Smith just missed a spot in the consolation semifinals at 133. Smith lost in the second round of the championship bracket then worked his way through the consolation bracket.
Smith won three of four matches in the consolation bracket by a pin then lost to Alexander Schmitz of Morningside (Iowa) one match short of the semifinals by a 10-6 score.
Howard Johnson wrestled his way to the championships quarterfinals before losing to Sean Glasgow of Chadron State, 7-2. Johnson then lost in the sixth round of the consolation bracket to end his day.
Both Cody Liles and Forrest Lalaguna wrestled deep into the afternoon for the Cougars. Liles went into the third round of the championship bracket at 133 before losing. In the consolation fourth round, Liles defeated Matt Torring of Hastings (Neb.) by a 5-4 score. His day ended in the next round.
Lalaguna lost in the opening round at 285 then won three matches in the consolation bracket after receiving a bye. His day ended in the fifth round in the consolation bracket as well.
Four more Barton wrestlers made it into the fourth round of the consolation bracket. Greg Bentley (125), Christian Rivas (157), Devon Baker (174), and Trent Miles (174) all lost in that fourth round.
