Goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas of the No. 14-ranked Barton Community College men’s soccer team was named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Goalkeeper of the Week.
Vargas, a sophomore from Jersey City, N.J., has played in 1½ games over the weekend, as the Cougars went 1-0-1 in Cheyenne, Wyo, at the Laramie Classic.
Vargas helped hold both No. 18 Laramie County and Otero scoreless, making 10 saves in 135 minutes of play.
Barton had a scoreless tie with Laramie County, and defeated Otero 2-1. Cougars freshman goalkeeper Jose Perez gave up the goal with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
Sophomores Ebu Camara and Mariano Gelso scored the Barton goals against Otero.
The conference honor marks the fifth time Vargas has won the weekly award after winning four times last season. As a freshman, Vargas helped lead the Cougars to a 16-3-1 record and No. 6 national ranking enroute to earning first-team All-Jayhawk Conference honors.
Barton will next play an exhibition on Friday night against Fort Hays State University, kicking off at 8 at the FHSU Soccer Stadium.
The Cougars will begin conference play on Thursday, Sept. 5, at Cowley before their home opener on Sunday, Sept. 8, against Coffeyville.
