The Barton Community College women’s basketball team had two selections to the All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division’s second team — sophomore Alisha Fanshier and freshman Christina Caddy.
“Having two second-team selections shows we had a good season this year,” Barton head coach Keith Ferguson said. “I thought we could have had three with Netanya Jackson. I thought she had better numbers than some of the players on the honorable mention.”
Fanshier led the Cougars with 3.7 assists per game (92) and from the free-throw line, shooting 78 percent (85 of 109).
“She had a great season in the conference,” Ferguson said. “She really picked up her game when we got to conference play. She got more aggressive, going to the rim.”
Fanshier missed the first seven games of the season due to an off-court issue. Without Fanshier, Barton went 2-6. After Fanshier rejoined the team, the Cougars went 5-1 in their next six games.
Fanshier was a NJCAA and KJCCC women’s basketball Player of the Week at the end of January after she dropped in seven 3-pointers in the final half of Barton’s 88-75 victory over Colby, leaving her one short of a school record.
Fanshier followed that Wednesday performance with a weekend in Pratt where she posted another four 3-pointers, scoring 22 points to lead the Cougars to a 87-70 win.
Fanshier was also selected as an honorable mention in the NJCAA Region VI.
Caddy topped Fanshier in points per game with 12.6. Fanshier finished the year at 12.3.
Caddy also averaged 6.2 rebounds per game, putting her behind Barton’s post players, Netanya Jackson (6.9) and Dionne Harris (7.3).
“She really picked it up in the conference games, too,” Ferguson said. “I think she just figured out how to score. She started picking her shots and being patient.”
Barton finished tied for second with Cloud County in the West with a conference record of 12-4.
BCC made a run in the NJCAA Region VI tournament, first beating Labette at Kirkman Activity Center on March 1, 84-47.
Caddy joined four other Barton players in double figures against Labette, scoring 11 points. Caddy also grabbed seven boards in the win.
“(Caddy) did a lot for us this year,” Ferguson said. “You have to be an all-around player to make the all-conference team.”
In the quarterfinal game against Independence, Caddy scored nine points and Fanshier led the Cougars with 16 points, going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Barton’s men landed two players on the all-conference team in swingman Colin Beatty as a second-team selection for the second straight season and power forward Dwayne Brunson as an honorable mention pick.
Beatty, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, who signed before the season to play for NCAA Division-I Loyola of Chicago, averaged 13.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the Cougars, who lost in overtime at Cowley County in the opening round of the Region VI tournament.
Brunson was a big-impact freshman for the Cougars. He averaged a team-leading 14.2 points to lead Barton. along with 8.2 rebounds.
The Cougars finished the season with a 19-12 record, including 7-9 in the Jayhawk West, good for seventh place.
Barton’s Achilles’ heel was overtime games, where it had a 1-6 record, which prevented them from having one of the best records in the region.
