BCC racks up big points at Booster Club Classic
Diovante Caldwell v Redlands.jpg
Barton freshman Diovonte Caldwell muscles his way up for two against Redlands Friday night at the Best Western/Booster Club Classic. Barton swept a pair of games at the Classic, scoring 246 points in the process. The Cougars are now 4-0 on the season.

Scoring points was not a problem for the Barton men’s basketball over the weekend. The Cougars topped the 100-point mark both nights of the Best Western-Booster Club Classic at the Barton Gym, cruising to a pair of wins.

Barton opened play Friday with a 119-94 win over Redlands then beat Spring Creek Academy Saturday, 127-68. The wins move Barton to 4-0 on the young season.

“We scored quite a few points,” Coach Craig Fletchall said. “When we get in games with teams that like to get up and down the floor, we can do that but we can’t get away from what we do best.

“We still have to play on the defensive end and we have some work to do on that. It was better Saturday, especially in the second half.”

Barton got off to a slow start Saturday against Spring Creek Academy. In fact, five minutes into the contest, Barton held a slim 11-10 the Spartans.

Over the next couple of minutes, Barton began to take control. Diovante Caldwell scored on a layup to start an 11-0 run. A long trey from Leondre Washington and a reverse layup by Mavrick Gildyard gave Barton a 19-10 lead.

Spring Creek, playing its second game of the day after going to Pratt to take on the Beavers in an afternoon tilt, hung around.

Barton’s lead finally hit double figures when the Spartans Donald Ray Garrett was called for a charging foul and whistled for a technical as well. Caldwell hit both free throws and on the ensuing possession, Gildyard was fouled and hit both free throws as well for a 34-21 lead with 7:03 to play in the half.

The lead hit 20 much quicker. When Caldwell found Akeem White for a fast-break alley-oop dunk, Barton had a 46-26 lead with just under four minutes to play. Another White dunk following a steal made it 48-26 and the Cougars were rolling.

By half, Barton led 61-36 and was well on its way to a 4-0 start to the season. The Cougars topped the 100-point mark on a Breontae Hunt 3-pointer with seven minutes still to play.

Hunt led Barton with 26 points off the bench, hitting all 10 shots from the field including 5-of-5 on 3-pointers.

White scored 16 and Elijah Ford 14 as seven different Cougars scored in double figures. Both White and Ford had eight rebounds. Washington handed out seven assists for the Cougars.

In the win over Redlands, the Cougars offensive was in high gear. Barton shot 55 percent from the field and made 22-of-29 free throws in the 119-point explosion.

Things were close much of the first half as Barton led 34-30 with 7:14 to play in the half. The Cougars went on an 11-0 run – thanks in part a pair of Redland’s player were hit with technical fouls and the Cougars took advantage.

Caldwell made all four free throws for Barton. That started an 11-0 run Barton that included a 3-pointer by freshman Martin Vogts and was capped by two more Caldwell free throws.

At that point Barton led 45-30. The Cougars would score 18 points in the final four minutes of the half to lead 63-47 at intermission.

The led grew to 88-55 on a Tyrell Andrews 3-pointer early with still 15 minutes to play.

White had a big night, going a perfect 11-for-11 from the field for 24 points. Ford added 22 points while Vogts and Washington scored 16 each.

The Cougars are at home Tuesday and Thursday this week against the McPherson JV and the Tabor JV in 7:30 p.m. tips.
