NORTH NEWTON – It wasn’t a perfect day, but it was still pretty darn good.
The Barton women’s team did not sweep the Bethel Threshers but did finish out the regular season with a 6-3 win at North Newton.
Barton will host the Region VI Championships Saturday and Sunday at Veterans Park in Great Bend.
“We had a few hiccups, but overall the dual went well,” Coach Lyle Stickney said of his team’s win over Bethel.
Barton won five singles matches but came away with only one doubles win.
That win at doubles was by a formidable team of Neus Torregrosa and Idah Longwe at No. 1. The duo continued to roll up the wins by defeating Kimberly Buzzbe and Jennifer Harrison, 8-2.
Both won their singles matches as well. Torregrosa won 6-2, 6-1 over Buzbee at No. 1 while Longwe won 6-0, 6-0 over Julie Baker at No. 4.
Julia Romalho and Julianna Seabra lost at No. 2 doubles but came back to win singles. The duo lost 8-4 in double while Romalho won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Seabra 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3.
Jenna Groene won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles while Shai Cartmill lost a tough 7-5, 7-5 singles match at No. 6.
Next is the Region VI meet. Seward County comes in ranked No. 6, Cowley No. 10 and Barton No. 17. The other team will be Hesston.
