WINFIELD — The Barton Community College women’s golf team jumped back into Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play by claiming first place at Quail Ridge on Sunday. Coffeyville was the host.
Battling the rain on Saturday and high winds on Sunday, the Lady Cougars shot a 391 to edge second-place Colby by 29 shots.
“The winds were blowing up to 30-35 mph,” Barton head coach Doug Kaiser said, “and it was coming straight out of the south. The girls shot really well considering the wind. They did a really good job.”
The tournament, which was the first conference tournament this spring, was scheduled to be 27 holes of golf, but Saturday was cut short due to rain.
“We usually hold tournaments on Sunday and Monday, but this one was moved to Saturday and Sunday because of spring break,” Kaiser said. “Saturday was a wash. We went nine holes before we had to call it.”
Rachel Strecker, who shot an 87 to take first place at the tournament, led BCC, which placed five women in the top 10.
“She just looked great out there,” Kaiser said. “She is a very strong player for us. She has won the last two conference tournaments.”
The Lady Cougars will be back in action on April 3-4 when they will host the fourth KJCCC tournament at Stone Ridge golf course in Great Bend. The tournament will be open to the public.
