It wasn’t the outing that Coach Lyle Stickney was looking for as the Barton women’s tennis team served it back up after Spring Break.
But, as they say, things happen.
“I knew we were in trouble when I got a call on Thursday that Shai (Cartmill) had a car accident on her way back from spring break,” Coach Stickney said. “She has several bruises and was unable to play. That sent us up that well-known tributary.”
With that, the Cougars traveled to Hillsboro to take on Tabor College Saturday, losing by a 6-1 count with a couple draws open.
“This was not the outing nor the result I’d anticipated,” Coach Stickney said.
The lone win came at No. 2 doubles, where Ksenija Dmitrovic and Jenna Groene teamed up for an 8-3 win over Lindsey Stroud and Olivia Brubacher.
“Ksenija and Jenna had never played together before,” Coach Stickney said. “One couldn’t tell that from the way they performed.”
The Cougars competed in all the singles matches but couldn’t quite get a win. In a battle of ranked foes at No. 1 singles, Jessica Emoto of Tabor got by Neus Torregrosa, 7-6, 6-3.
Every Cougars won at least two games in each set but could not capture a set. Sarah Hammer lost at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2 to Mandi Hett. Dmitrovic lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 to Heidi Klaassen, Groene lost at No. 4 to Brubacher, 6-3, 6-3 and Thamires Lima fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 to Tessa Isaac.
The Cougars will take on NCAA DII foe Fort Hays State today in Ellinwood. First serve at the grade school tennis courts in Ellinwood will be at 3 p.m.
