BCC women secure third seed, home playoff game

There was a lot to play for during the final regular season game of the year for the Barton women’s basketball team.

A win and Barton would be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Region VI tournament to start Wednesday. A loss and the Cougars would hit the road for that first playoff game.
There is no need to service the Barton bus. The Cougars made sure they would be at home with a 64-56 win over Garden City.
“It wasn’t pretty,” Coach Alan Clark said. “But it’s better to win ugly than lose ugly.”
The Cougars ended up tied for third in the Jayhawk West with Pratt at 11-10. Thanks to a series sweep of Pratt, the Cougars got that third seed. That means Cloud County will visit the Barton Gym to start Region VI Wednesday.
Hutchinson ended up winning the West with a 19-2 record after beating Seward (18-3), 78-62, at the Sports Arena Saturday.
The win Saturday ended a brief 2-game losing skid and losses in four of the last five outings.
The Cougars knew going in it would not be easy despite the Broncbusters sitting in seventh place in the West. Earlier this year at Garden, Barton trailed nearly the entire way before outscoring Garden 24-13 in the final quarter. In fact, Barton outscored Garden 9-2 the final 2:20 of that game for an 80-79 win.
Barton once again got off to a slow start but this time did not wait until the final period to recover.
A 10-0 run extending through the end of the first and into the second quarter gave the Cougars a 22-15 lead and Barton never looked back.
The lead hit double figures when Richelle Turney scored on a long jumper to make it 28-17 midway through the second period. At half, Barton still had a double digit lead at 33-23.
Garden was able to get the lead down to six in the third period at 39-33 but Barton had an answer and had the lead back to 10 by the end of the period, 50-40.
Barton maintained a lead around 10 points nearly the entire final period, leading by as many as 13.
Queen Ulabo had a huge night for the Cougars. The freshman scored 17 points and grabbed 20 rebounds on Sophomore Night. Turney and Vanessa Oduah both added 15. Oduah also had seven assists.
Donetria McGee scored 15 to lead the Broncbusters.
Now it’s on to the post season.
Barton and Cloud met earlier this season with Barton rolling to a 78-57 in Great Bend. If the Cougars would get a win in that contest, they would move on to Dodge City for quarterfinal action.
“He always has his team prepared to play,” Coach Clark said of Cloud County Coach Brett Erkenbrack. “We played really well in that second half.”
The Cougars would play the winner of Coffeyville and Garden City contest Saturday at 7 pm at the United Wireless in Dodge.
