Barton Community College volleyball player Juliana Melo de Barros has been named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference volleyball co-player of the week.
De Barros, a sophomore setter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, recorded another remarkable week for the Lady Cougars, directing the offense on the way to dishing out 110 assists, a 10-assist per set average.
A first-team member of last year’s KJCCC West All-Conference team and Barton’s Region VI championship team, de Barros has been integral in leading the No. 18-ranked Lady Cougars to a 15-6 record on the season, including an undefeated 8-0 in conference play.
She shares the honor with Seward County College sophomore outside hitter Courtney Geesing.
De Barros started off the week with her second triple-double of the season with a 10 kill, 10 dig, 55 assist effort against Colby Community College on Monday, Sept. 26.
In addition, her 38.1 hitting percentage was instrumental in bringing the Lady Cougars back from a two-set deficit to win the match in five sets.
In Liberal last week, de Barros had an off night but still delivered 26 assists, drilled three aces, collected four kills and two blocks in Barton’s three-set sweep of Seward County.
To round off her remarkable week, de Barros returned to form on Friday leading Barton to yet another sweep of an opponent by dispatching Garden City, hitting 45.5 percent with 29 assists and another three aces.
“It’s hard for a setter to get the nod for player of the week,” Barton head coach Patrick Hall said. “In truth, Ju (de Barros) should be a candidate every week, as she certainly puts up the numbers, and is clearly instrumental in our success. Getting another triple/double probably earned her the attention she deserves.  It was nice to see that recognized.”
Barton travels to Dodge City today to take on the dangerous Lady Conquistadors in conference play.  The Lady Cougars will then travel to Colorado Springs to play in the Air Force Prep Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Barton’s next home match is Oct. 12 against Hutchinson in another key conference match.
