NORFOLK, Neb. – The Barton men’s soccer team took a little frustration out Sunday afternoon during the second half of its 7-0 win over Northeast Community College in Nebraska.

After seeing a 2-0 lead disappear in their first loss of the season the prior day, the No. 19 Cougars led just 1-0 at intermission Sunday. Then the explosion happened. Barton blew things open with six second half goals on the way to the easy win.

The win improved the Cougars to 4-1 on the young season while Northeast falls to 1-4.

The lone goal of the first half came midway through the opening period on a David Palacios goal 26:06 into the contest. It was the first goal for the freshman from Salina.

It didn’t take long for Barton to add to the lead once the second half got underway. Mario Magana scored the first of two goals less than five minutes in.

The real onslaught started with 25 minutes to play in the game and Barton up 2-0. Magana scored again to make it 3-0, this time on an assist from Nicolas Torres.

Five minutes later it was 4-0 after Gabriel Arraes scored for the seventh time in just five games. Another goal three minutes later by Hiroo Kimura on an assist from Colin Roemer gave Barton led 5-0 with still 15 minutes to play.

Roemer added a pair of goals within a minute of each other 10 minutes later for the final 7-0 margin for the Cougars.

The shutout was the third for Barton in five games. Northeast was only able to get four shots off, three of which were on goal and saved by Felipe Baeza, making his first start of the year.

Barton will be at home Wednesday at 4 pm to take on Hesston in a contest that will count toward the Region VI seeding at the end of the season.

The Cougars will actually start the Jayhawk West season Saturday when Dodge City comes to the Barton Sports Complex. That game will kick at 4 p.m. as well.
