Butler Community College’s  Zac Bargen poured in 26 points, hitting 6 of 8 3-pointers, including a go-ahead trey with 1:50 remaining in  overtime, helping the Grizzlies ease past Barton 81-77 Monday night at Kirkman Athletic Center.
Bargen’s trifecta gave the Grizzlies a 78-77 lead before the Panthers missed a trio of shots and also turned the ball over with 15.6 seconds left. Butler made 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch, including a pair by Brandon Hilyard with 2.4 seconds left to give the Grizzlies a four-point cushion.
Bargen had also given the Grizzlies the lead at the end of regulation, drilling a 3-pointer with 1:51 left to give Butler a short-lived 71-69 lead.
Colin Beatty scored 17 of Barton’s final 22 points of regulation, including making a spin move in the lane with 1:40 left, tying the game at 71, which ultimately sent the game into overtime.
Beatty totaled a team-high 24 points, hitting 9 of 15 field goals. Jalen Boyd added 13 points and Dwayne Brunson scored 12 for Barton, which dropped to 14-5 overall and 2-3 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Divison.
Butler (12-6, 2-2) was coming off an 81-80 victory over NJCAA top-ranked Hutchinson on Saturday night, while Barton had beaten Garden City on the road. Barton travels to Hutch on Wednesday night.
The Grizzlies knocked down 12 of 29 3-pointers, including 9 for 15 in the second half after missing 11 of 14 during the opening 20 minutes, where Barton posted a 27-26 halftime lead.
The Cougars struggled mightily from the free-throw line, making only 15 of 27 foul shots (55.6 percent). They were outrebounded by the Grizzlies 45-34, with Andre Ingram finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Josh Gibbs grabbing a game-high 11 boards for the visiting team.
Barton point guard Storm Sanders finished with 10 assists and eight points.
