The impressive thing about the youthful Barton Community College men’s basketball team is the balance the Cougars display.
Unbeaten Barton has different guys that can lead on any given night.
Four BCC players scored in double figures, led by a 27-point explosion by North Hills, Pa., product Chris Cantino, and the Cougars routed Frank Phillips 104-74 Saturday night in the finale of the two-day Barton Classic at Kirkman Athletic Center.
The basket must have looked really big for Cantino, who knocked down 10 of 14 shots and had 12 rebounds — eight off the offensive glass — to finish with a double-double in 24 minutes of action.
Topekan DeVonte Grant added 16 points, including 3-for-4 on 3-pointers, and post player Adam Young hit 5 of 8 shots and finished with 13 points. Dwayne Brunson added 11 points for the Cougars (4-0), who had a decided edge underneath the backboards, 52-30.
Frank Phillips (2-3), out of Borger, Texas, was led by Marlon Ford with 14 points and six assist. Teammate Trevor Niles added 13 points.
The Plainsmen fell behind 50-28 at halftime after shooting just 26.7 percent from the field (8-for-30). For the game, Frank Phillips missed 17 of the 22 3-pointers.
There was a brief exchange between Cantino and Grant late in the first half, but it had no effect on the team or the players. The duo accounted for 43 points, shooting a combined 14-for-20 from the floor and 12-for-15 on free throws.
The Cougars shot 34-for-67 from the floor for 50.7 percent from the floor, although they made only 7 of 19 3s. They connected on 29 of 37 free throws for 78.4 percent, and had 21 team assists, led by forward Carl Wallace with five.
