COFFEYVILLE — After a big third quarter, the Barton women’s basketball team was on the verge of pulling off the upset of the third place team in the Jayhawk Conference.
But the Cougars went cold for a long stretch in the final period, allowing the host Red Ravens to pull away at Nellis West and remained tied for third.
Coffeyville defeated the Cougars by a 58-48 final.
Barton, which has already secured the No. 7 for next week playoffs, will finish out the regular season Monday at the Barton Gym. Neosho will visit in a 5:30 pm tip.
The Cougars are 12-13 in the Jayhawk and 15-14 overall. Coffeyville is tied for third at 19-6 in the conference. The Red Ravens are 20-8 overall.
Barton trailed 24-17 at the half and were down 30-19 with 8:23 left in the third. A Baylee Robinson jumper got the Cougars going. Jalisa Jones followed with a jumper and Megan Jirak made her only 3-pointer of the night to make it a 32-26 game with 6:39.
From there, the Cougars were in the game. Jones had a chance to tie the game to end the third but hit 1-of-2 free throws and Barton trailed 35-34 with 10 minutes to play.
Robinson did tie the game at 40-all with 6:08 to play but that would be the final points the Cougars would score in nearly four minutes. That allowed the Red Ravens to go on a 10-0 run and build a 50-40 lead.
Lauren Welsch paced the Cougars with 13 points off the bench. Robinson added 10. Welsch and Katrina Roenfeldt had five assists each while Roenfeldt and Robinson grabbed six boards apiece.
Alaine Fisher and Antoinette Daniels each scored 15 to lead the Red Ravens.
Barton will look to even its Jayhawk record Monday night in preparation for first round post-season play. The Cougars will start the post-season Thursday against Northwest Tech.
