It was a fairly quick night at the Barton Gym Wednesday night.
The Barton wrestlers and Colby hooked up in a Jayhawk Conference dual of ranked foes in the final home match of the year for Barton.
Colby, ranked No. 22 in the NJCAA, spoiled the No. 13 Cougars’ sophomore night with a 33-22 win.
The dual saw four open weights, three from the Cougars, which was the difference in the final.
The teams started at the 174 division, which meant four of the first five weights would be one. Barton won the only match sprinkled in as Joey Ewalt defeated Aiden Smith at 184, 11-3 for four points. Ewalt is ranked No. 7 at the weight.
When the forfeits had cleared, Colby led 18-10 with five matches to be decided.
The first two of those matches featured Colby’s two ranked grapplers. Rhett Miner, ranked No. 8, won by fall over Javier Duchene at 133 but at 141 Barton was able to get the win.
Drew Burgoon won by fall over 9th ranked Rush Fannon at 141 to keep Barton’s hopes of a win alive, trailing 24-16 with three matches to go.
The lead grew to 27-16 for Colby after Kaene DeSantos beat Barton’s Kolby Droegemeier in a close battle, 7-4.
Barton need a pair of falls for the win but had 3rd ranked Gable Howerton at 157 and 9th ranked Andrew DeArmond at 165.
Those hopes for a pair of pins and the win ended quickly as Dino Baldes scored an upset win over Howerton, getting the pin just 1:36 in.
DeArmond had very little trouble in the final match of the night, earning a fall at 1:19 for the final margin.
The Cougars will be off to the Jayhawk Conference Duals on Feb. 9 in Colby then get ready for the post season a couple weeks after that.
