Home has not necessarily been kind to the Barton men’s basketball team during Jayhawk Conference play this season.

Heading into the Cougars game against Colby Saturday night, Barton was 15-2 overall on the season and 6-2 in the Jayhawk. But the Cougars had a bad home loss to Independence and escaped thanks to a last-season 3-pointer against Pratt in the last home game.

This time there would be no last-second heroics.

Colby came into the Barton Gym and handed the Cougars a 75-70 loss, leading nearly the final 15 minutes of the contest.

The loss drops Barton to 6-3 in the Jayhawk, tied for second in the loss column with Hutchinson (7-3). Seward leads the West at 8-1. Colby is now right on the heels of Barton and Hutchinson for that second spot at 6-4. The Trojans are 11-8 overall.

“We just don’t seem to play as well at home,” Coach Craig Fletchall said. “I’m not sure what it is. Our team last year was the same. We have to take more pride in protecting our home floor.”

Colby came out and punched Barton in the mouth. After the Cougars went up 2-0, Colby scored the next 10 points in a matter of two minutes.

The Trojans would hit 6-of-9 shots to start the game and build a 17-6 lead five minutes into the game.

Following a time out by Barton, the Cougars would settle down and score the next four points to make it it a 17-10 game.

That started an 8-1 run that got the lead down to 18-14 and the Cougars were back in the game.

Barton went back on top when Akeem White followed in a Leondre Washington miss to give Barton a 23-22 lead with 7:55 to play in the half.

When Washington was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and made all three free throws, the Cougars had a 31-27 lead with four minutes to play in the half.

Barton led just 34-33 at half but a quick start to the second half pushed that lead out to 44-35. At that point, it looked like Barton might take control of the game.

But Colby was having none of it. The Trojans answered with an 8-0 run to cut the margin to 44-43 with 13:50 left in the game.

When Josh Edwards buried a trey from deep in the far corner to cap a 12-0 run, the Trojans had a 47-44 lead and Coach Fletchall called a timeout for the Cougars.

Elijah Ford ended the run with a bucket and free throw to tie the game at 47-all with 12 minutes to play.

But Colby didn’t let up. The Trojans continued to grab offensive rebounds and knock down long shots to keep playing from in front.

The lead reached eight for Colby after a trey by Eric Turner to give the Trojans a 65-57 lead with 5:48 to play. At that point, Colby was a blistering 7-of-11 on 3-pointers in the second half.

A runner in the lane by Washington to go with the ensuing free throw got Barton going, down 65-60 with 4:40 left.

Back-to-back baskets by Ford, cut the lead to 69-66 with 2:54 left. The Cougars had two chances down 71-68 but turned the ball over both times – the latest with 47 seconds left.

Colby’s Eddie Davis cut down the lane, got a pass from Craig Beaudion and scored with 22 seconds left go give Colby a 73-68 lead. That would be the final nail.

Ford led Barton with 19 followed by Washington with 16 and White with 14.

Beaudion led all scorers with 22 points to lead the Trojans.

Barton will make the trip to Goodland and Max Jones Fieldhouse Wednesday to take on Northwest Tech. The Mavericks were just 1-8 in the Jayhawk and 9-9 overall going into their game Saturday against Garden City. Tip will be at 8:30 p.m. central time.
