KANSAS CITY, Mo. — All of the starters were gone by the time the first quarter was halfway over on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium.
A vast majority of them never saw the field at all.
Kansas City closed the National Football League preseason with a 30-8 victory over the Packers (1-3) on a muggy late-August evening. Third-string quarterback Tyler Bray threw three touchdown passes and kicker Ryan Succop booted a trio of field goals for the Chiefs, who finished 2-2 and will travel to Jacksonville for the regular-season opener on Sept. 8.
For starters, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith never played in the game, where it wouldn’t make much sense to risk injury. Neither did a majority of the other starters from both sides.
Paramount for both teams was taking a final gander at the personnel before trimming their rosters down to the mandatory 53-player limit by Sunday.
The Chiefs led 13-6 at halftime after scoring a tiebreaking touchdown with five seconds left in the second quarter on wide receiver Junior Hemingway’s 8-yard scoring catch from Bray, capping a seven-play, 50-yard drive in the final 1:35.
Bray threw a 43-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Josh Bellamy at the 6:03 mark in the third quarter to increase the lead to 20-6.
Green Bay’s only points of the second half came at the 1:44 mark in the third quarter after Bray, pinned deep in his own territory, was sacked in the end zone for a safety by Packers linebacker Sam Barrington, making it 20-8.
After Succop’s third field goal, another 48-yarder, made it 23-8, Bray, a rookie out of the University of Tennessee, hooked up with wideout Frankie Hammond Jr. on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 5:18 left to fix the final margin.
Succop and the Packers’ Mason Crosby traded a pair of field goals in the first half, translating into a 6-6 score at the 3:23 mark in the second quarter. Succop made 37- and a 48-yarders, and Crosby made 48- and 45-yarders.
Both teams got their first scores after making interceptions.
Green Bay led 3-0 after a pick by Tramon Williams of Chiefs backup QB Chase Daniel on the first play from scrimmage led to Crosby’s 48-yard kick at the 12:59 mark.
The Chiefs later tied the game at 3-3 after Frank Zombo, a free-agent linebacker trying to make the team, picked off Packers second-string quarterback B.J. Coleman and returned it 27 yards to the Green Bay 14. Succop split the uprights on a 37-yarder after the drive stalled to knot the score with 3:54 remaining in the opening quarter.
Action became listless at that juncture before Succop hit his 48-yarder with 8:50 remaining in the second quarter, giving the Chiefs a 6-3 lead. It came after KC drove 25 yards on six plays to get into field-goal range for Succop.
But Crosby’s 45-yard field goal with 6:13 left in the second quarter tied the game for a second time.
The Chiefs grabbed their seven-point lead after having success in the hurry-up offense.
Notes — Succop finished the preseason 9-for-9 on field goals. … Green Bay quarterback Vince Young, who has bounced around the league the last three years after spending his first five with the Tennessee Titans, is trying to land a backup spot with the Pack. He was listed as third string.
