SALINA – The Barton women’s tennis team had very little trouble in defeating Kansas Wesleyan Thursday afternoon in Salina, winning all but one match during the afternoon.
The Cougars swept the doubles matches and one all but one single battle.
“The ladies put it together today as a team,” Coach Lyle Stickney said. “Hopefully they can keep the momentum as we play back-to-back conference matches over the weekend.”
Neus Torregrosa rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles over Paola Vargus then teammed with Sarah Hammer for an 8-4 win in doubles.
“Neus continues to roll along winning her third straight match to open the spring season,” Coach Stickney said. “But, she will be tested at Seward on Monday.”
Torresgrosa is ranked No. 9 nationally in singles.
Hammer, a freshman from Winfield, won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Mallory Lantz.
Serbian freshman Ksenija Dmitrovic rolled over Jessica Smith at No. 3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Shai Cartmill defeated Chelsea Berrick, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Jenna Groene had to work in the first set at No. 5 singles, winning 7-5, 6-0 over Bri Mendoza.
Cartmill and Groene teamed up to win No. 2 doubles, 8-1 while Dmitrovic and Thamires Lima won at No. 3 doubles, 8-5. The lone loss on the day was at No. 6 singles, where Lima lost 6-0, 6-1 to Katie Andrews.
The Cougars, ranked No. 16 in the nation, will head to Liberal to take on Seward County Monday. The Saints are ranked No. 3 in the country.
