COFFEYVILLE — Just about a month ago, the Barton women’s basketball team beat Coffeyville at the Barton Gym. That loss sent the Red Ravens into a tailspin to take them out of a race for the Jayhawk title down to sixth place.
Thursday night in the opening round of the Region VI basketball tournament, there would be no upset.
The Red Ravens scored nearly at will from the start as they ended Barton’s season. Coffeyville won the opening round game, 86-61 at Nellis Gym in Coffeyville.
Coffeyville came out on fire this time around, leading 27-15 after the first quarter. The Red Ravens continued to pour it on in the second period. The lead grew to 20, 39-19, with six minutes to play in the opening half.
The Cougars whittled that lead down to 15 on a pair of occasions and Coffeyville went to half on top 48-33.
The teams traded baskets much of the third period. Barton got the lead down to 13 late the quarter before a pair of free throws gave Coffeyville a 63-48 at the end of three.
A quick four points by the Red Ravens pushed the lead back to 19 early in the fourth. Coffeyville continued to pull away from Barton early in the period, ending any small hopes the Cougars had for a comeback.
The lead reached 73-49 with just more than six minutes to play and eventually got as high as 30.
The loss ends the Barton season at 14-17. Coffeyville moves into quarterfinal action at Hartman Arena in Wichita with a 22-9 mark. The Red Ravens will take on Cowley, 24-7.
