Desean Munson puts down a dunk in the first half of Barton 89-85 win over No. 24 Coffeyville Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars are now 1-1 in the Jayhawk and 9-2 overall.

After a dizzying 234 combined points in the Barton men’s Jayhawk Conference opener, things were a little more slow paced Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.
The Cougars rebounded from a 122-112 loss to Cowley by handing No. 24 Coffeyville its second conference loss of the season.
Barton defeated the Red Ravens, 89-85.
That, too, was a bit different than the combined 51 points Coffeyville had beaten Barton by the last two meetings combined.
Barton is now 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk. Coffeyville, which also lost to No. 2 Hutch, is 1-2 in the conference and 9-4 overall.
“We played pretty well tonight, especially in the first half,” Coach Craig Fletchall said. “Our defense played better. It was great, but it was better.
“We needed this win. That may sound strange with just two losses this year and just two games into the conference, but that was a big win.”
After falling behind 6-5, Barton’s Mavrick Gildyard gave the Cougars the lead back. Gildyard scored seven points during an 11-2 Barton run that gave the Cougars a 16-8 lead with 12:27 left in the half.
Barton would not trail again.
The lead hit double digits when Keandre Bowles buried a trey with 7:37 to play for a 26-15 Barton lead.
A pair of Martin Vogts 3’s in just more than one minute extended Barton’s lead to 36-23 with 4:30 left in the half.
Barton led by as many as 15 late in the first half before going to intermission with a 41-29 lead in one of the best 20 minutes the Cougars played to date.
It was a half that saw Barton hit 55 percent from the field and 7-of-14 on 3-pointers while committing just four turnovers against the No. 24 team in the nation.
Barton would hold that double digit lead most of the opening stages of the second half. A highlight play came on a Justin Harmon dunk with 13:51 left for a 54-43 off a nice steal and assist from Vogts.
Coffeyville trimmed the lead to 60-53 when Tyler Perry finished up a 4-point play with just more than 11 minutes left in the half.
Vogts’ fourth trey of the game got the lead back to double figures a couple minutes later.
The Red Ravens kept the pressure up, cutting the lead to 67-61 with just more than six minutes left. A Manny Crump free throw got it down to four, 71-67 with 4:48 to play.
Desean Munson had the answer. The freshman scored inside an added a free throw to extend it back to 74-67. The next trip down, Barton got a big steal that eventually led to a layup from Jahiem Holden for a 76-67 lead with 3:53 to play.
In the final minute, Barton’s inability to knock down free throws made things interesting. The Cougars hit just 5-of-8 free throws while the Red Ravens made it an 85-82 game with nine seconds to play.
Vogts made two free throws with eight seconds left but a quick trey made it 87-85 with three seconds still to play. Finally, Holden’s two charity tosses sealed the win.
Vogts and Gildyard had a career night for Barton. Vogts finished with a game-high 24 points while Gildyard added 18 off the bench. Munson finished with 13 and Caldwell 11.
Kymani Dunham led five Red Ravens in double figures with 18.
Now its a trip to southeast Kansas to take Independence. The Pirates are 1-1 in the Jayhawk and 9-2 overall.
