CONCORDIA — With four minutes left in the second overtime period, Barton Community College soccer player Jonson Shaad scored the winning goal to beat Cloud County on Tuesday afternoon.
On a pass from Ahmad Bah, Shaad’s goal elevated the Cougars’ overall record to 8-1, 4-0 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division.
“It was a very emotional game,” BCC head coach Oliver Twelvetrees said. “The kids showed a lot of character and a lot of heart to come back like that. I was very proud of their effort and their never-say-die attitude. It was a special moment for the Cougars.”
Fabio Priore got the scoring started for Barton, which is ranked No. 2 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll and No. 1 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of American poll.
“We’ve never been No. 1 in either poll, so we’re excited about that accomplishment,” Twelvetrees said.
However, Cloud County (4-1-2 overall, 3-1 KJCCC) scored two unanswered goals, leaving the Cougars behind 2-1.
At the 86th minute, Bah broke past the defense and scored the equalizer, forcing the game into overtime.

The Cougars fall to 3-5 overall, 2-2 in the KJCCC.
“It is obviously disappointing to lose 7-1,” BCC head coach Shawn Uhlenhake said. “But we knew coming into these last two games that would be playing some of the best teams in our conference. These games allow us to see where we can get better, and we will go back to training and work on what we can to get better.
“The girls are still working hard, and we understand its a marathon and not a sprint.”
Freshman forward Courtney Galliher scored BCC’s lone goal to make it 3-1, but Cloud County scored again to make it 4-1 at the half.
