In the final game before Christmas break for Barton Community College, the Cougars wanted to go out with a bang Monday night.
BCC head coach Craig Fletchall said before the game that anything less than a 30-point blowout of the Southwestern junior varsity would be underachieving.
One would never think that the Moundbuilders would outrebound the Cougars, 52-45, but that’s the only area they came out on top.
Cougars starting power forward Dwayne Brunson started a jam session with a breakaway dunk in the first half, a full-blown dunk-fest that kicked into full motion during the final half of a 96-54 drubbing at Kirkman Athletic Center.
“The main thing, whether it’s dunks or not, we wanted to attack the glass better than we have,” Fletchall said. “I thought our transition was really good.
“I thought we stood around a little bit too much in the first half, and that’s why the rebounding numbers were a little skewed, but then we had 11 offensive boards in the second half.”
Coupled with countless dunks, a byproduct of forcing 33 Southwestern turnovers, Barton scored 40 points off those miscues, including 34 fastbreak points.
Yet, the telling statistic was 44 bench points.
Brunson and small forward Jalen Boyd, who also drew a start, each scored a game-high 17 points to lead five Cougars in double figures. Ebenezer Davis added 14 points off the bench, hitting 6 of 8 field goals, including a pair of 3s.
Darius Hill added 13 points and six rebounds; and Kevin Barber had 11 points, including a pair of dunks.
The ambidextrous Carl Wallace had seven points, six rebounds and 12 assists — topping off his productive night with a vicious one-handed slam on the break.
“I’d say there was a dozen or more than that,” Wallace said of the rim-rattlers.
Fletchall didn’t have a chart on it, either.
“We put the dunk-o-meter away,” Fletchall said. “The main thing is that everyone was unselfish, and that’s tough to do in a game like this.
“I promise, everyone that played for us tonight will be important for us next semester.”
Davis, for one, said it was the Cougars style to run-and-gun, an opportunity for the bench players to shine.
“It was nice running and just getting out on the break,” Davis said. “That’s the game we should be playing.
“I think it gives us a nice momentum, when we start our conference games next month.
