KANSAS CITY — After a day getting used to the course, the Barton men’s golf team left the contenders in the rearview mirror.
The second day of the Blue Devil Fall Classic hosted by fellow Jayhawk school Kansas City Kansas saw the Cougars just miss shooting par as a team as they beat the rest of the field by at least 13 strokes.
The result was the Cougars first win of the fall season. Barton shot a 2-day, 36-hole team total of 591 – some 18 shots better than runner-up Kirkwood Community College from Iowa. Host KCK was third with a 619 at Dub’s Dread Golf Course.
Barton and Kirkwood were tied after the opening day with 14-over 302 totals. The second day, Barton shot a 289 as it pulled away from the rest of the field.
“We didn’t go down and get a practice round in,” Coach Doug Kaiser said. “It was the first time playing the course for us and there were a lot of blind tee shots.
“Our kids learned a lot that first day and used it on the second day. We really played well Tuesday.”
That may be an understatement. Barton had three players shoot even par 72 the final day and a fourth shoot 73.
That helped the Cougars go 1-2-3-5 overall.
Freshman Oscar Elfvin won the meet on a tiebreaker from sophomore teammate Thitipong Homruen. Both players shot 73-72 for a 1-over total of 145. Elfvin won on scorecard playoff starting with the No. 1 handicap hole.
Those two were five shots better than the Adrien Bonnet’s 150, which tied him for third. Bonnet shot 77-73 for a 150. Alone in fifth was Kylian Cavdar. The Cougar sophomore opened with a 79 but fired and even par 72 the final day for a 151. Kelby Titus shot 80-75 – 155 for a tie for 11th.
The Cougars also took a second team to the event to get some players competition in the fall. Jacob Roth led that group with a 168 followed by Jacob Uhrmacher with a 174. Michael Kelly shot 179, Taylor Travis 184 and Tanner Randall a 202.
The Cougars will travel to Tyler, Texas next week for the Tyler Junior College at Pine Springs Golf Course. The fall portion of the season will wrap up Oct. 30 in a home meet for Barton at StoneRidge.
