At first glance, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team hasn’t moved much on the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division standings after its rout of Colby on Wednesday.
Upon closer inspection, Barton sits in third place and at 18-2, 4-2, one-half game behind Colby (17-4, 5-2). First-place Seward County lost to Garden City on Wednesday, 81-74, dropping to 17-3, 5-1.
The Trojans are idle this weekend, meaning Barton can make up the difference with a win over Pratt on Saturday night at Kirkman Activity Center. The game begins at around 8:10 after the women’s game, which starts at 6.
Pratt is 10-10, 1-5. The Beavers are led by 6-foot-1 sophomore Bryton Hobbs, who is averaging 18.3 points per game. Trae Beck averages 11.8 points, and Armani Brown averages 11.7 points.
Barton will likely employ the same fast-paced offense and scrappy defense that led it to what was effectively a 50-18 run that consumed most of the first half against Colby.
Freshman guard Algie Key is averaging 18.9 per game on the season, but against Colby, he supplied his teammates with chances to score, finishing with 11 assists to compliment his 14 points.
Sophomore forward Dwayne Brunson, narrowly missed back-to-back double-doubles after serving a two-game suspension, scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing nine rebounds against Colby. He had 16 points and 10 rebounds against Hutchinson the game before.
Lady Cougars

The Barton women, 13-7 overall, 3-3 Jayhawk West, who are coming off a 61-58 road win over Colby on Wednesday, will be hosting the Lady Beavers.
The Lady Beavers are 11-9, 1-5 after a 75-45 loss against Hutchinson.
Pratt is led by 5-7 sophomore Ann Pauly, who averages 13.3 points per game.
Cari Guyton, a 6-2 sophomore, averages 12.2 points and a team-leading 9.3 rebounds
Sophomore forward Dionne Harris averages 13.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game to lead the Lady Cougars.
Sophomore guard/forward Shea Shoemaker, who averages 8,9 points per game, finished with 13 points against Colby, including shooting 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
