CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Barton Community College men’s soccer team reached a 0-0 stalemate against No. 18-ranked Laramie County to open the season on Saturday during the Laramie Classic.
The Cougars, who were recently picked to win the 2013 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference title in the preseason coaches poll, will play Otero Junior College today at 1 p.m.
“The boys played really well,” Barton first-year head coach Kevin Kewley said. “We had a few chances. They had a couple of chances to win.
“Overall, it was just a good first test for the guys, and they past with flying colors.”
Kewley, who took over for Oliver Twelvetrees after he left to head up the men’s soccer program at Brevard Community College in Melbourne, Fla., said the team has responded well to his coaching.
“They’re getting used to me and my methods,” Kewley said. “I knew that Barton came up here a couple years ago and lost, so I was knew it would be a good test.
“We haven’t played in a competitive match yet, so I was very pleased with everything they did.”
Barton finished with eight shots on goal, but wasn’t able to get any into the net.
“They did everything that I asked of them,” Kewley said. “The keeper just made some good saves.
The Cougars went 16-3-1 overall last season, 10-0 in conference play. They won a National Junior College Athletic Association Region VI championship before getting knocked from the postseason by Western Texas in the Plains District Championship.
