Putting together several runs throughout, Barton Community College’s men’s basketball team drubbed Brown Mackie 91-64 Tuesday night at Kirkman Athletic Center.
“I think our guys were pretty focused for a mid-week game,” Barton head coach Craig Fletchall said. “Sandwiching this game between two classics, we knew we had our work cut out for us.”
The Cougars (5-0), fresh off a pair of victories over the weekend during the Barton Classic, only had their work cut out for them for a brief spell. They built a 35-14 lead at the 8:08 mark in the first half and never looked back.
“I thought the start we had was magnificent,” Fletchall said. “I think we outrebounded them 13-1 in the first few minutes, and that’s pretty impressive.
“As long as we go to the glass, we can maybe offset some bad shooting nights.”
Barton, which will play host to the Booster Club Classic on Friday and Saturday, got a scare when Cougars freshman forward Chris Cantino collapsed on the court after getting hit in the jaw during a scramble underneath the basket.
After Cantino left the sideline, he collapsed a second time and had to be helped into the trainer’s room.
“I’m good,” said Cantino, who joked with students and friends after the game. “All I saw was stars.”
Barton’s Carl Wallace, a 6-4 freshman guard from Philadelphia, Pa., recorded a double-double and narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 19 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists.
Wallace was one of four players who scored in double digits for the Cougars. Colin Beatty had 17 points and eight rebounds, Cantino had 15 points and five boards and Dwayne Brunson had eight points and grabbed eight boards.
BCC post player Adam Young had seven of his 11 points during the decisive first half.
A trio of runs during the opening half helped Barton pull out to a 47-25 halftime lead.
Barton’s first run came after Brown Mackie had evened the score at 6-all. The Cougars had a 12-2 burst over the next three minutes for an 18-8 lead — kick-started by back-to-back 3s from Wallace and DeVonte Grant and capped by Brown Mackie calling a timeout to regroup.
After five straight points by Brown Mackie closed the gap to 18-13, the Cougars went on a 17-1 tear over the next 3 ½ minutes to build their lead to 35-14.
Jalen Boyd started the surge with a 3-pointer, and Young and Dwayne Brunson finished it by scoring in multiples of 3 — Young hit a trey and Dwayne Brunson converted a three-point play.
Brown Mackie answered with five straight points to close to 35-19, but the Cougars went on a 7-0 run for a 43-19 lead, with Beatty nailing a 3 and a bucket.
The Cougars, who shot 51.3 percent in the first half, finished 39-for-77 (50.6 percent). They made 6 of 13 3s in the first half and missed all five of their 3s after halftime.
