Cougars struggle to score in conference opening loss to Garden
Barton Basketball

Several different things come into play for winning a basketball game. But, perhaps, the most important is making a shot or two.

While the Barton women’s basketball team did make a shot or two, it wasn’t a whole lot more than that in a 68-35 loss to Garden City Wednesday night.

The contest was the first of 24 Jayhawk Conference contests from now through the end of February.

Barton made nine field goals the entire night. The Cougars didn’t make a 3-pointer and nearly scored as many points from the free throw line as they did from the field.

The Cougars hit 9-of-43 shots from the floor and were 0-for-8 on treys. The one place Barton shot well was at the charity stripe, where the Cougars hit 17-of-21 shots.

Barton did not score in the contest until a Mikaela Hall jumper with 1:08 left in the opening quarter.

Fortunately for the Cougars, Garden City has scored just six points at that point and led 6-2 after the first quarter.

The biggest scoring period of the night for both teams was the second period. Unfortunately for Barton it was a 26-point quarter for the visiting Broncbusters and just 14 for the home standing Cougars.

The Cougars were still sort of in the game at 18-10 midway through the second period. But an 8-0 run made it 26-10 and by half it was a 32-16 lead for Garden City.

If there were hopes of a third quarter comeback by the Cougars, Garden City smashed them early. The Broncbusters opened the period on a 16-2 run to take a 48-18. Ball game.

Dayjsha Fanning led Barton with seven points as no Cougar hit double figures. Hall was the only other Barton player to have more than four points with six.

Barton has now lost three straight contests as it heads into an off date this weekend. The Cougars will be back in action Tuesday with a trip to Arkansas City to take on Cowley. The Tigers have lost two straight themselves, falling 69-62 to Coffeyville in their conference opener.
