HUTCHINSON — It was a good opportunity to get in some golf on the course where the Region VI Championships will be held.
Sweden freshman Vilma Efraimsson took full advantage, winning the Sterling Spring Invitational with a 9-over par total of 153 at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson for the Barton women’s golf team.
That paced the Cougars to a second place finish behind the University of Jamestown out of North Dakota. Jamestown shot a 647 to win the meet followed closely by Barton with a 649 and Kansas Wesleyan with a 657.
Kansas Wesleyan led after the first day at 322 with Jamestown and Barton on the Coyotes heels at 327. Day two say the Jimmies of Jamestown shoot a 320 and Barton 322 while KWU slipped to 337.
Efraimsson was tied for the lead after day one with a 75, along with Tiara Diaz of Kansas Wesleyan. But Diaz shot an 82 on the second day while Efraimsson fired a 78 to win by four strokes.
Barton freshman Mutita Booranakunamanee finished fourth at 158 and sophomore Lucia Rodriguez-Zapico also finished in the top 10, tied for ninth with a 166.
Sophomore Kendra Jellison was consistent on her two rounds, shooting an 87-85 for a 172 in 13th place. Miranda Kern rounded out the Barton team with a pair of 90s for a 180.
The Cougars actually fielded two full teams, with the Barton B team taking eighth. Hoisington freshman Delaney Smith paced the second team, shooting a 92-99 to finish 30th with a 191.
Barton will jump back into Jayhawk Conference play in Dodge City, where the Cougars will wrap things up Friday in the finale for the regular season.
