Neither team ever held a decisive lead as Barton Community College’s women’s basketball team hosted Garden City.
In fact both teams’ highest lead was in the first half as Garden City held an eight-point lead just three minutes into the game, and Barton held a six-point lead with 2:33 remaining in the opening half.
The game went into overtime with Garden City finishing on top 66-65.
“I thought we battled our tails off,” Barton head coach Carter Kruger said. “I’m very proud of the effort that we gave. We were just a few little things away from winning the game and winning it pretty easily.”
Barton drops to 18-12 overall and 6-8 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division. Garden City improves to 16-13, 8-6.
Barton went 13-for-25 (52 percent) from the field in the first half, leading 35-32 at intermission.
In the second half, Barton couldn’t buy a bucket, making 6 of 24 (25 percent).
“Offensively, we just didn’t play as sharp as we’re capable of,” Kruger said. “In the second half especially, we struggled to get many good shots. Our movement wasn’t very good, and that had a lot to do with it.”
Both teams stood at 57 after regulation.
Barton started things off well in overtime, getting the first four points, but Garden City climbed back.
“We got up 4-0 and then we celebrated and they dribbled the ball right down and scored,” Kruger said. “We’ve got to learn from that. We’ve got to be better.
Both teams went back-and-forth, but Garden City took a 66-62 lead with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Kruger called timeout and set up a play, but Brandy Winbush was fouled with 1.7 seconds left.
She sank the first free throw to make it 66-63, and Garden City called a timeout.
Winbush struck the rim with her second free throw, and Taylor Mayes got the rebound and putback as the buzzer sounded, leaving the score 66-65.
Phikala Anthony scored a team-leading 13 points for Barton.
Sophomore Taylor Mayes closed out her final home game with Barton by recording a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Mariana Lambert scored 11 points, and Cheyenne Hedrington grabbed a team-leading 12 boards.
Barton’s six sophomores, Mays, Lambert, Winbush, Hedrington, Kailai Brantner and Ashton Bruner, were recognized between games.
Kruger said Barton will likely be traveling to Cowley on Saturday to open the NJCAA Region VI Playoffs.
