Building upon last season’s third-place Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference finish, the Barton Community College women’s soccer team is looking to take the next step.
The Lady Cougars received third place in the preseason conference coaches poll.
It will be the second year under Lady Cougars head coach Aaron Avila, who was named KJCCC Coach of the Year after leading Barton to a 15-4-1 record. It was 10-2-1 in conference action.
Bianca Barron, who was selected as a first-team all-conference forward as a freshman, will be back.
Barron scored 31 goals in 2012, leaving her second all-time in Barton history for goals scored in a single season behind Shala Giardini’s 59 goals in 2009.
Also returning are defender/midfielder Olimpia Bonilla and midfielder Mariana Poveda, who were second-team All-KJCCC selections.
Sophomore midfielder Emily Troll was honorable mention as a freshman.
Ranked No. 14 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, the Lady Cougars open the season on Saturday, Aug. 31, in Tyler, Texas, as Barton challenges nationally-ranked opponents in successive days.
The Aug. 31 challenger is No. 13 Navarro College. The game starts at 4 p.m.
On Sunday, Sept. 1, the Lady Cougars face host No. 4-ranked Tyler Junior College at 5 p.m.
