The Barton Community College women’s soccer team is full of new faces.
Both players and coaches.
Aaron Avila is the new head coach of the Lady Cougars, who have 13 freshmen.
“We started a couple weeks ago pretty much,” Avila said. “We’ve been training hard trying to get ready. Our first game is at Sterling on Monday, so that will tell us a lot. We’ll see what we’ve retained from our training sessions.”
Avila said that having a young team has helped him settle in as a new head coach.
“They are almost an entirely new team,” Avila said. “We have three sophomores. Everyone else is a freshman. We have 16 girls on the roster and 13 are freshman. They are all coming along well, though. We are improving in practice.
“We have a talented group.”
Of those 16 players, nine are midfielders.
Avila said that his offense will allow midfielders to play up with the forwards, giving them a chance to score.
“They’ll play some in attack and some on defense,” Avila said. “That plays into our system, some play up and some play back.”
Avila said that the trick is getting the young group of players acclimated to playing together as a team.
“We’re trying to get set,” Avila said. “More than half of these girls, they haven’t played on the same team before. A couple of these girls are from the same high school, but most of them haven’t played together.
“They’re relatively unknown together. We have to get on the same page.”
