CONCORDIA – Once again, the Barton men’s soccer team went to the wire in its Jayhawk West contest.

This time is was a battle to be the front-runner in the West as Barton battle conference leader Cloud County in Concordia Saturday night under the lights at Clark Stadium.

The match went to the final minute tied. In fact, it went to the final seven seconds.

That is when Barton freshman Damen Marcu scored the biggest goal of his young career at Barton. Granted, it was his first goal, but it will take a lot to score a bigger one.

Marcu found the net with seven seconds to play on an assist from Damia Viader to give the Cougars a 2-1 win over Cloud County in a battle between West leaders.

The win improved Barton to 4-0-1 in the West and 8-1-1 overall. Cloud County still leads the West under the points system with a 5-1 records. The T-Birds are 6-4 overall.

Marcu scored the game-winner from 13 yards out. For Viader, it was his second assist of the night. He found Marcu from the wing, setting him up for the game-winner.

Barton dominated play, getting off nearly twice as many shots and putting 10 more of those shots on goal than its counterpart.

The Cougars put 14 shots on goal to just four for Cloud. But Barton never led until those final seven seconds.

Cloud County took the lead midway through the opening half. Djougher Oliveira gave the Thunderbirds the 1-0 21:35 into the match when he scored on a rebound off a free kick.

That is where the scored for more than 40 minutes.

The Cougars were able to even the contest nearly 20 minutes into the second half.

Gabriel Arreas scored his 11th goal of the season on a thru ball from Viader. Those 11 goals lead the Jayhawk Conference.

Barton will be back home Wednesday to battle Northwest Tech at 4 pm. The Mavericks are 1-3 in the conference and 1-5 overall.
