PLANO, Texas – Thales Machado stayed alive in the winner’s bracket at the NJCAA Men’s National Tennis Tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals on day two.
Machado is one of three Barton men still playing heading into day three of the event at Collin County Community College in Texas.
As a team, the Cougars currently sit in 14th place after two days of competition with 11.5 points. Seward, Tyler and ASA Miami are tied for the lead with 27 each.
Machado won his Round of 16 battle with Albert Smreczak of Prairie State in straight sets at No. 5 singles. Machado defeated Smreczak, 6-3, 6-2.
The road gets pretty tough in the quarterfinals for the sophomore from Brazil. Next up will be draw’s top seed in Tyler’s Drew Brown.
Ending the tournament in the Round of 16 in the winner’s bracket were a trio of Cougars.
Miguel Valle lost his Round of 16 match to the sixth seed at No. 3 singles. Valle lost to Marcel Agbegne of New Mexico Military, 6-1, 6-0.
The other two Barton players lost to the top seed in their draw.
At No. 4 singles, Jack Peoples fell to Alejandro Hayen of Tyler in easy fashion, 6-1. 6-1. Tinashe Muzenyi lost at No. 6 to top seed Tomas Santantonio of ASA Miami, 6-0, 6-0.
Still alive are a pair of singles players in the consolation draw. Marcel Miasato is into the quarterfinals in the consolation draw at No. 1 singles after beating Cade Pressnell of Wallace St, 7-5, 6-0. Juan Jaimes had a bye into the quarterfinals at No. 2, where he will face Anthony Kendall of Prairie State.
All three Barton doubles team are finished after the second day.
Valle and Peoples lost in the Round of 16 in the championship draw at No. 2 singles to Emanuel Mallya and Kukutia Motlojoa of New Mexico Military, 6-1, 6-1.
The other two teams lost in the consolation draw. Miasato and Jaimes lost in a 3-set battle at No. 1. The duo fell to Jordan George and Peter Kovats of South Carolina Sumter in the first round, 2-6, 6-4, 10-3. Machado and Muzenyi lost in the consolation quarterfinals in straight set to the team from Mississippi Gulf Coast.
