Freshman Lydia Mato shattered a 22-year-old school record as the Barton Community College women’s track and field team helped christen Rock Chalk Park this past week at the 87th Annual Kansas Relays in Lawrence.
The freshman from Ghana led the final two laps of her 5,000-meter race but was passed down the stretch to finish third in a time of 17:15.36.
The effort surpassed the school mark of Rachel Juarez — 17:32.50 — set during the 1992 season.
Fellow Ghana native sophomore Agnes Abu also had a good day, finishing second in the 800 run by a narrow one-second margin, crossing the line at 2:12.25.
Barton will head to Hays on Saturday, competing in the FHSU Open to wrap up the outdoor regular season.
