BARTON 83, COFFEYVILLE 72 — Ring Malith converted a pair of late-game 3-pointers to spark No. 1 Barton past Coffeyville 83-72 in Tuesday's Region 6 basketball quarterfinals. The Cougars beat Coffeyville three times.

The Cougars (30-1) play Butler (23-8) in Friday's Region 6 semifinal at Hutchinson. The Cougars have defeated Butler 65-61 and 93-71. Barton will play an extra game at Hutchinson, the site of the 2024 NJCAA Tournament.

The Cougars (30-1) outscored the Red Ravens 14-4 after leading 69-68. Malith's second 3-pointer led to a 75-70 lead. Lajae Jones delivered a slam dunk and Brent Moss hit a field goal and two free throws for an 81-72 lead. 

"Ring really helped us," said Barton coach Jeremy Coombs. "We hadn't played in a week, but we found a way to win. Coffeyville out-toughed us."

Malith (18), Moss (15) and Mozae Downing-Rivers (11) scored in double figures. Downing-Rivers delivered a double/double with 11 assists. Jones grabbed 10 rebounds.

Coffeyville's Cris Carroll scored 25 points and Jahni Summers added 15 points.

The Cougars roared to a 33-13 after 12 minutes. But Coffeyville's shift to playing a zone defense nearly worked as the Cougars made 10 of 33 3-pointers, 3 of 17 in the first half.

"Coffeyville coach Jay Herkelman is a great coach," Coombs said. "We knew they'd play zone. They took the paint away and made us shoot 3s. We wanted to attack the paint and get to the free throw line."
