Barton Community College's Brent Moss (16), Lajae Jones (15) and Keandre Kindell (10) scored in double figures to spark the No. 10 ranked Cougars past Coffeyville Community College 76-69 in Wednesday's Jayhawk Conference basketball game. Jones scored 13 second-half points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his fourth straight double/double.
The Cougars scored 33 bench points, 16 from Moss and 10 by Kindell with three steals.
The Cougars (13-1, 7-1 Jayhawk) scored 47 second-half points with 12 of 26 shooting (46%) and 19 of 24 free throws. Barton struggled offensively in the first half after a 20-day layoff.
"I've never seen a clean game out of a break. You have to start from scratch. We knew we had to be patient," said Barton coach Jeremy Coombs. "We got after it in the second half."
Moss added eight second-half points.
"Brent Moss is a special player and a person," Coombs said. "He doesn’t take a day off. He loves it here.”
The Cougars scored 12 consecutive points after halftime. and built a 19-point lead and held off a Red Ravens' comeback. The Red Ravens drop to 7-6, 3-4 Jayhawk.
Myles Thompson added eight points and eight rebounds. Mozae Downing-Rivers scored eight points and had five assists. His highlight was a thread-the-needle assist to Jones' for a 3-point play stopping a Coffeyville 10-1 run.
Coffeyville's Chris Carroll (16), Brian Griffith (14), Jayven Cofer (13) and Jahni Summers (12).scored in double figures. Cofer had five assists and four steals.
NOTES—Barton won the last two meetings against Coffeyville for the first time since 2009. The teams have split the last six meetings at Barton, but Coffeyville is 6-4 in the past 10. Barton leads 10-5 at Barton and 22-19 overall. Cooper Jackson has 146 career steals one behind Jason Carter (2000-02), five behind LaKeith Humphrey (1986-88)
