HUTCHINSON — In a David vs. Goliath Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division basketball matchup, Barton Community College’s women’s basketball team couldn’t play the role of giant killer.
The NJCAA No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons built a 31-21 halftime lead and pulled away with four second-half 3-pointers for a 59-44 victory on Saturday night at the Sports Arena.
Hutch (25-0, 12-0) kept its unbeaten streak in tact after the Lady Cougars shaved the lead down to 53-46 with 2:34 remaining.
But a trey from Laura Patrick with 1:37 left put the Dragons out of arm’s reach.
Barton long-range shooter Shea Shoemaker hit 4 of 11 shots, including a pair of 3-point hits, along with 4 of 6 on foul shooting in finishing with a team-high 14 points.
Power forward Dionne Harris added 11 points and seven rebounds for Barton (16-11, 6-7), and center Netanya Jackson had a monster rebounding effort with 14 boards, including 11 on the defensive end, to go along with seven points.
Patrick had a double-double, scoring a game-high 17 points, hitting 7 of 13 shots from the floor, including 3 for 8 on 3s.
Jackie Patterson added 12 points and seven rebounds, along with Jasmine Patterson put in 10 points for the Dragons.
Buoyed by 50-percent 3-point shooting in the opening 20 minutes, Barton stayed in contention and trailed by 10 points at the break.
Shoemaker had a pair of 3s, and Devan Boeger and Erin Copeland each had one as the Lady Cougars rebounded from a sluggish start after trailing 13-2 out of the gate.
But the Lady Cougars, who committed 11 first-half turnovers, made only 2 of 16 from inside the arc, contributing to their falling behind.
