PRATT — It is only the fifth time that the Barton Community College women’s basketball team has lost to Pratt Lady Beavers in 69 meetings.
Wednesday night’s 65-58 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division loss was the first time Pratt swept the regular-season games between the two teams in school history.
“We keep making steps forward, but we can’t seem to take those last steps,” Barton head coach Darin Spence said. “We get close, but we always end up letting games slip away.
“You know, it goes back to people saying, ‘It’s only Pratt.’ We can’t look at things like that, and that’ll change.”
Barton, which led by as much as nine points in the second half before Pratt took control, went on a 6-0 run to take give it a 55-53 lead with less than five minutes remaining.
But Pratt’s Ann Pauly turned the lead around with a pair of baskets.
“She’s good,” Spence said of Pauly. “She’s a smart player, a tough player. She just kicked our butts tonight, no question.
“She made her shots and she made free throws.”
The Lady Cougars never regained the lead, and Sarah Johnson made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
Pauly finished with a game-high 22 points.
Cari Guyton recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds for Pratt.
Sophomore forward Dionne Harris led the Lady Cougars with 15 points and nine rebounds. Netanya Jackson finished with 12 points and eight boards.
Barton shot only 6 for 15 from the free-throw line for 40 percent.
