spt CougarHead2C

The opening round match-up for the Barton women’s basketball team was definitely not your normal No. 10 seed.
Northwest Tech brought a 28-1 record to the Barton Gym. So, there was not doubt it was going to be a challenged for the No. 7 seeded Cougars.
But Baylee Robinson was up to the challenge. The sophomore post player had a career night for Barton to led the Cougars into the Region VI quarterfinals.
Sophomore Katrina Roenfeldt was too. The duo would not let their Barton careers come to an end.
Barton had to battle through overtime, but came away with an 85-81 win over the Mavericks.
The win moved Barton into the quarterfinals Monday at Hartman Arena in Park City. Barton will play Hutchinson at 3 p.m..
Robinson, a transfer from Trinidad State, poured in 36 points to lead Barton to the opening round win. Roenfeldt added 22.
The two dominated the overtime. Roenfeldt started it with a 3-point play to give the Cougars the lead. The lead grew to 77-73 before the Mavericks scored the next four to tie with just more than two minutes left.
Robinson gave Barton the lead back on a 10-foot jumper with 1:50 to play, 79-77. Robinson made it 81-77 with 1:10 left on a short turnaround in the lane.
Another layup by Robinson on a feed from Megan Jirak with 33 second to play pushed the lead back four at 83-79. Barton forced the Mavericks to use 25 seconds to finally score but by that time just six seconds remained.
Regan Unruh hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left to put the game on ice.
Barton appeared to be in good shape to start the fourth quarter as a quick 5-0 run to start the period, capped by a Katrina Roenfeldt trey gave the Cougars their biggest lead of the night at 62-54.
But the Mavericks caught the Cougars at 71-all when Robinson came through again with just 21 seconds left. A step-through shot in the lane with gave the Cougars a 73-71 lead but the Mavericks quickly pushed the ball down the floor and drew a foul.
Destiny Lindsey, a 46 percent free throw shooter who had not scored on the night, made both free throws to tie the game at 73-all.
Barton had one last chance but a Jones runner bounced off and the game went to overtime.
Robinson made 17-of-26 shots on her way to 36 points. She added 13 rebounds as well. Roenfeldt made four treys to propel her to 22 points to go with nine rebounds.
Unruh’s only points were at the free throw line, hitting 6-of-10, but none bigger than the final two points of the game. She led Barton with a career-high eight assists. Jones added 10 points.
Juliet James led Northwest Tech with 20 points followed by Tran Brown with 17 before the Mavericks leading scorer fouled out with four minutes left in regulation.
Now its another 1-loss team for the Cougars as they battle 30-1 and No. 2 ranked Hutchinson with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
