Kade Sander continued to have a nice freshman season for the Barton wrestling team. The Great Bend High School product was the lone wrestler to come away with a placing at the Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open this past weekend.
Sander went 7-2 on the weekend, working his way to the consolation final, placing fourth at 157 pounds for Barton. Sander wrestled into the third round of the championships bracket before losing a close 6-4 decision to Bubba Jaramillo of host UNK.
Sander rolled through his first two opponents in the consolation draw then earned a close 3-2 decision over Johnny Porter of Chadron State (Neb.). Sander moved into the consolation semifinals with an 11-7 win then earned a medical forfeit to the third place match. Sander lost the third place match by an 11-3 decision to Kellen Pelzel of New Mexico Highlands.
After sitting out his senior season at GBHS, Sander has picked right back up as a freshman for the Cougars.
Will Bardezbain made it to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket at 125. The Wichita sophomore lost in the quarterfinals to Drake Foster of the University of Wyoming. Bardezbain picked up one win the consolation draw before losing 13-8 in the consolation draw.
Caysen Smith at 133 and Khalil Franklin at 125 both made it to the third round of the championship bracket before they were defeated. Smith is a freshman from Abilene and Franklin a freshman from Wichita.
Zach Vesta, a freshman from Manhattan, lost in the opening round at 149 then won four straight – three by fall – in the consolation bracket before losing to Ezekiel Mamalis of Western Wyoming on the fifth round of the consolation draw.
Barton will be off until Dec. 4 when the Cougars will host one of two home meets this season. Barton will host a dual with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. The match will start at 7 p.m. at the Barton Gym.
