Renan Sousa has had some big games and big weekends during his time at Barton. None bigger than what he accomplished in Oklahoma over the weekend.

A day after dishing out three assists to start the weekend Saturday, Sousa scored three goals Sunday as the Barton Community College men’s soccer team completed a road sweep of junior varsity teams in Oklahoma.

Sousa dished out three assists in a 4-0 win over the Oklahoma Wesleyan JV Saturday night. The Cougars then loaded up and traveled a couple hours for a 7-0 blanking of the Southwest Christian JV Sunday afternoon highlighted by Sousa’s three goals.

The Cougars are now 4-0 on the year with the schedule ready to pick up with Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa next up.

While individual accomplishments and offensive accolades were at the forefront over the weekend, it was the defense that impressed coach Aaron Avila.

“We had a couple players who posted big numbers offensively but I was more pleased with our collective defensive work rate and the two shutouts this weekend,” Avila said. “We still have a lot to improve on and I know our games will just get tougher. The team is coming along well and if we keep improving we will be very tough to play against.”

“Wednesday’s home game will be a very tough test for us,” he said.

The weekend saw a couple of personal accomplishments tied. In the win Saturday, Lucas Alves scored a hat trick to go with three assists from Sousa. It was just the fourth time in school history the Cougars had a player record three assists and another score three goals in a single game.

It happened twice in 2009 and once in 2005. The most recent came when Kevin Ellis scored four times on three assists from Leandre Rios. Rios is the career leader at Barton with 26 assists while Ellis is playing MLS for Sporting Kansas City.

In Saturday’s win’ Alves, a freshman, scored twice in the first half to give Barton a 2-0 lead. The Cougars made it 3-0 just two minutes into the second half on Sousa’s second assist. The duo of Alves and Sousa got the double hat trick with 40 minutes left in the game.

Sunday Sousa became just the third player to school history to get three assists and three goals in the same season. Bruno Conceico did it in 2005 and Sam McCrillis in 2009. McCrillis, like Sousa, did it in back-to-back games.

Barton took a 3-0 lead to half as Jiro Barriga Toyama scored an unassisted goal then assisted Sousa twice. Sousa made it 4-0 and earned his hat trick 10 minutes into the second half.

Barton would add three more goals in the blowout win.

The Cougars are back at home Wednesday to battle Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa in a 4 p.m. start. Tonkawa is 3-2 this season and 3-1 against Jayhawk Conference schools. The lone loss was to Coffeyville with wins over Neosho County, Allen County, and Cowley.
