EMPORIA — Two-time defending state champion Central Plains captured third place in the 1A Division 2 state volleyball tournament. The Oilers (32-9) defeated Hutchinson Central Christian 25-19, 26-24 for third place.
State runner-up Lebo edged the Oilers 25-23, 25-20 in a hard-fought semifinal. The Oilers edged Lebo 26-24, 25-23 for the 2020 state title. Two-time Division 2 state champion Hanover downed Lebo 25-28, 25-19 for its second straight state Division 2 title.
Hanover outlasted two-time state champion Central Plains 25-19, 25-20 in Friday's Division 2 volleyball pool play in battle of 2020 state champions.
Oiler 1A-Division 1 Player of the Year Kassidy Nixon was spectacular and Madison McGuire and Shaylah Kempke contributed several winners. But Hanover's hard-hitting attack was too much to overcome.
Hanover's powerhouse frontline of Ceegan Atkins, Taeban Stallbaumer and Madison Bruna delivered winner-after-winner. Hanover also got contributions from Allison Jueneman and Massey Holle.
The Oilers cruised past Dighton, 25-12, 25-20 and Centre, 25-11, 25-12 to qualify for Saturday's 1A Div. 2 semifinals.
2A DODGE CITY — Ellinwood (35-8) lost to Garden Plain 23-25, 25-6, 25-19 for third place in 2A state volleyball after losing to 2Astate champion Smith Center 25-20, 25-11 in the semifinals. Smith Center (43-2) downed Hillsboro 25-23, 25-12 for the 2A state championship.
Ellinwood rallied to survive a three-way tie with Jefferson North and Shawnee Maranatha by winning four sets and losing five sets. All three teams finished with 1-2 records, but Jefferson North and Maranatha were 3-5 in sets played.
The brilliant play of Ellinwood's Gabby Jacobs and Brittany Simpson wasn't enough as the Eagles lost 25-20, 24-26, 25-18 in a close opening 2A match against the Shawnee Maranatha Eagles. Maranatha closed with an 11-4 run keyed by Madison Piva's strong attacks. Regan Rieder delivered two ace serves in the late going.
